*whimpers* like pulling teeth
Feb. 5th, 2003 10:43 pmHad my first critique in my Drawing 2 class today and while it wasn't the most painful critique I've ever had(that honor goes to the critiques under my evil psychotic photography teacher bitch from HELL!!) What made this critique so painful was the way the teacher set it up. Everyone put their work up, one person picked on peice to comment on(and had to use some specific art terms) then the artist who made the piece picked another and so on thoughout the whole class. Now because they have drawing 1 and drawing 2 in the same class, for the vast majority this is the first critique they've been a part off. SO picture this a room full of students, unsure what their supposed to say, uncomfortable with judging other people's work, uncomfortable speaking in public. Yeah that sounds like a good plan >< One girl looked so nervous about the whole thing I thought she was going to cry, or puke. Nothing really useful came out of it, at least I didn't get anything, but then the person who critiqued my piece was so soft-spoken I couldn't hear a word she said as she was coached through commenting by the teacher. So all in all a rather wasted time. Now I understand the importance of teaching people how to critique work as it helps them evalute and improve their own, but I don't see this as a very helpful way of doing it.
