Well I guess I'll throw in my two cents
Feb. 6th, 2003 08:24 pmAbout the new posting limits here on lj. Well to recap what others have said, limits are understandable but the method of execution was poorly planned and announced. All and all it doesn't really effect me even as a free user and likely to stay that way, because I'm really quiet and I'ld be surprised if I managed to average 3 posts a week. The customizable features offered in the paid service don't really matter to me either, I'm just here to read about my friends. Reading through the threads on the matter there is only one thing that really bugs me. It's the ones complaining about the free users, calling them a waste of bandwidth and oxygen, as well as lazy bums who don't contribute to the LJ community. WTF!!! What rock do they have their heads buried under? Just by being here and POSTING free users are contibuting to the community. They are contributing content! And for every person who finds tht particular content, boring, silly, or just plain stupid, there's another who found something interesting, humorous, or fun. Just because a person had a few extra bucks or a willingness to pay doesn't make their posts anymore interesting than some-one who's broke.
Remember when I said I was only here for my friends? When I joined I expected only the people who knew me from other places would befriend me and would be the only people interested in reading my babble. Imagine my surprise when one day I looked and two complete strangers had added me to their friends list. Somewhere, somehow two people had stumble across my lj and found my posts interesting enough to continue reading.
This is what makes Live Journal a community that everyone(well before the limits) could contribute as much content as they wanted, now with the limits set as they are it feels less like a community and more like exclusive club. I'm lucky enough that I don't have to alter my posting habits to fit into the new limits, but I can understand why some many free users are upset. It's like a beautiful public park was bought by a country club who blocked off all the best parts unless you join. So for all you paid users out there complaining about the free users, why don't you take a look through your communities and friends list and see how many people you like and won't be hearing from as much now that these limits are in place.
