The temple had a lot of rules. Don't run, don't yell, don't eat from the sacred tree and a hundred more. Goku never bothered to learn all of them; the priests just made up new ones. He figured breaking the rules just made things more interesting. Not to say he didn't understand the need for some rules, such as don't touch Sanzo's gun and don't take off his limiter. But scary things happened when those rules were broken. There was only one rule Goku followed; to always follow the path of his sun.
